구사일생 (九死一生)

오늘은 구사일생 (九死一生)입니다.
Today our 4-character saying is 구사일생 (九死一生).

우선 각 한자의 뜻부터 짚고 넘어가겠습니다.
First, let's start by learning each character's meaning.

  • 아홉 구 (九) : 9, 아홉 (nine)
  • 죽을 사 (死) : 죽음, 죽다 (death, to die)
  • 하나 일 (一) : 1, 하나 (one)
  • 살 생 (生) : 삶, 살다, 사람 (life, to live)

문자 그대로 9번 죽고 1번 살았다는 뜻입니다. 즉, '여러 번 죽을 고비를 넘겼다', '죽을 뻔 했다', '겨우겨우 살았다' 정도로 해석할 수 있겠습니다. 꼭 진짜 사람이 죽을 때만 쓰이는 것이 아니라, 경기에서 질뻔 했지만 운좋게 이겼을 때나 여러가지 비슷한 경우에도 쓰일 수 있습니다.
Literally the meaning goes, "Died 9 times, lived 1 time."
In other words, this can mean:
-To overcome a life-threatening crisis.
-Nearly died.
-Just barely survived.
This isn't a saying just for when someone nearly dies, but also in competitions where a team/someone nearly lost but had a lucky break and wins, or other similar situations.

실제 생활에서의 예문을 보겠습니다.Let's look at some colloquial ways to use this saying.

"높은 곳에서 떨어졌지만 구사일생했다."

I fell from very high up, but I survived.

"하키 경기에서 구사일생으로 결승전에 진출했다."(=겨우겨우 이겼다, 질 뻔했다)
The hockey team manged a win to scrape their way into the playoffs.

In Korea, many buildings, especially older buildings will not have a 4th floor [marked] or will have the fourth floor written as "F".  This is due to the number 4 having the same pronunciation as the symbol for "death", leading to the belief that the number 4 signifies death.  This thinking is similar in other countries who use the same characters such as China and Japan, making it an ominous number in all of East Asia.

홍일점(紅一點), 청일점(靑一點)

대부분의 사자성어는 이름에서 보듯 4개의 글자로 이루어져 있지만, 아주 가끔은 3개의 단어로 이루어진 글도 있습니다. 그래서 다른 말로는 옛날 일에서 온 말이라는 뜻으로 '고사성어(故事成語)'라고도 합니다. 엄밀히 따지면 사자성어는 고사성어의 범주 안에 들어갑니다.

Usually 4 character Chinese phrases, just like the name, have four characters.  However there are also sometimes phrases containing only 3 Chinese characters.   So these go by a different name, "go-sa-seong-eo" (고사성어, or idiom), meaning they carry meaning based on how they were used long ago.  Technically speaking, every "sa-ja-seong-eo" (4 character phrases) fall under the category of "go-sa-seong-eo".

[The term 고사성어 in English can be translated simply as 'idiom', however the idiom will might make more logical sense than an English idiom, which usually is understood as somewhat random.  This is why 사자성어 are so closely related to 고사성어 - as they are used more as whole phrases or sayings.]

이번 시간에는 일상생활에서 아주 많이 쓰이는 고사성어를 알아보려고 합니다.

Today we will teach you two very common 고사성어 (idioms).

꽃보다 남자: "홍일점"

홍일점(紅一點)    발음: /홍일쩜/    the only woman, the only girl

- 붉은 1개의 점 (남자들 사이에 있는 1명의 여자) lit. one red dot (coll. the lone woman in a group of men)

홍(紅) : 붉다, 빨간색  red, reddish

일(一) : 1

점(點) : 점, 점을 찍다  dot, to dot

예문) 그녀는 이 회사의 홍일점이다. She is the only woman in this company.

써니힐 (가수) : "청일점"

청일점(靑一點)    발음: /청일쩜/    the only man, the only guy

- 파란 1개의 점 (여자들 사이에 있는 1명의 남자) lit. one blue dot (coll. the only man in a group of women)

청(靑) : 푸르다, 청색, 초록색, 파란색  green, blue, natural [plant, water] colors

예문) 그 남자는 청일점으로 세미나에 참가했다. He is the only man who attended the seminar.

(※ 한국어로는 초록색과 파란색 모두 푸른색이라고 하기 때문에 한국인들은 가끔 이 두 색깔을 구분 못한다. 예를 들어, 신호등의 초록색 불을 '파란 불'이라고 한다. 또한 '푸르다'는 하늘이 푸르다(파란색), 나무가 푸르다(초록색) 등등 자연적인 색깔(color of nature)에 다양하게 쓰일 수 있다.)

(* In Korean, both green and blue are called "pu-reun" [푸른], so many Koreans can't distinguish between the two colors. For example, some people will call the green traffic light, a "blue light." Even the sky can be "pu-reu-da" [푸르다], as in "blue", or something can be "so pu-reu-da", as in "green", when talking about colors found [the plants or water] in nature.  )

남자가 여러명 있고 여자가 1명 있을 때, '그 여자가 홍일점이다'라는 말을 많이 씁니다. 반대의 경우는 마찬가지로 청일점이라고 합니다. 하지만 1명+1명이거나, 2명+1명이 있는 경우는 일반적으로 쓰지 않고, 4~5명 이상 많은 숫자의 남자 중에 여자 1명 있을 때나 그 반대의 경우에서만 쓰입니다.

When there is a group of men, and only 1 woman, people often say,
"그 여자가 홍일점이다"

For the opposite situation, it is the same.  Just replace with
"그 남자가 청일점이다. "

These idioms aren't used when there are only a few people, but when there are more than 4-5 people and among them there is only one man or one woman.

CLS' Supplementary Classes / 보충수업

CLS is now offering extra study time beyond our regular classes on an individual basis.

CLS는 학생들이 한글과 더 빨리 익숙해질 수 있도록, CLS 선생님들이 개별지도 해 주는 수업을 개설합니다.

These classes are more like a language exchange, where CLS students can get extra help on their lessons or on whatever self-study materials they have. The goal of these classes is to help CLS students become better at Korean more quickly.

이 추가 수업들은 '언어 교환'에 좀 더 가깝습니다. CLS 학생들이 수업 관련해서나 또는 혼자 공부하다 궁금한 점에서 추가적으로 도움을 받을 수 있는 곳입니다. 이 수업의 목표는 CLS 학생들이 한국어를 좀 더 빨리 익히도록 도와주는데에 있습니다.

Shown are 희승 선생님 and some students. She is helping
at a coffee shop near our classes at Soongsil University.
희승 선생님과 일부 학생들입니다.  수업 교실 근처에 있는 카페에서 도와주고 있습니다.

Currently the lower and intermediate level classes are open to CLS students only.  The lower level meets in the time between the level 1 and level 2 classes , and the intermediate level (3 and 4) can meet after their classes end.  Hee Seung teacher, who is leading the extra classes, will be there and also there could be other current or past CLS teachers who will help out when they have time.  The extra classes will take place in a cafe nearby the CLS classes (currently at Soongsil University).

For level 5 and above, we would like to form a more academic version of a book club. The first book we chose is called "고구려 1", a historical novel about the Goguryo period.  It's a good way to study Korean history without boring ourselves!  We would meet during the week just to discuss the pages we all read, ask about difficult vocabulary or problems with comprehension.
We would like to have at least 2 consistent students in order to aid in discussion, so if you are interested and want more details, please send an email to our blog (conversational.learning.seoul[@]gmail[dot]com) or write a note on our facebook page.

Today we will introduce the first in our 사자성어(saja song-eo) series. First things first - what is a 사자성어?  It means four-character idioms or sayings.
While they are not used often in speech, you might encounter them a lot when reading Korean newspapers or books.  Also, if you are studying for the upper level TOPIK, these 사자성어 appear in the reading section.

오늘부터는 '사자성어(四字成語)'를 소개하겠습니다. 사자성어란, 4개의 글자로 이루어진 말 이라는 뜻 입니다. 실제 일상 대화에서는 그리 자주 쓰이지는 않지만, 신문이나 책을 읽을 때는 많이 보게 될 것입니다. 또한, TOPIK 높은 레벨에서는 사자성어가 읽기 영역에 나올 것입니다.

For Korean language learners they are a good resource for studying 한자(Hanja), or Chinese character (Sino-Korean) roots.  Just like Latin and Greek roots in English, if you know the root, you can more easily guess the meaning of a new word in context without looking in the dictionary.  Beyond that, just the simple act of forming connections between words helps your brain recall new vocabulary.

As Valentine's Day approaches there is the feeling of love in the air.  So today's 사자성어 is 애지중지, which in English could mean "cherish" or "treasure."  It can also have neutral to negative meanings in context, such as "dote on" or "coddle"

발렌타인 데이가 가까워 오면서, 사랑의 감정들이 곳곳에 퍼지고 있습니다. 그래서 오늘의 사자성어는 '애지중지(愛之重之)'로 할까 합니다. 영어로는 의미가 'cherish'나 'treasure'에 가깝습니다. 또한 중립적이나 부정적인 의미로 'dote on'이나 'coddle'같은 뜻도 있습니다.

    Naver 한자사전 entry
    애    사랑  (love)

    지    이(것) (pronoun (it, this))

    중    소중함 (precious)

Examples from Naver dictionary (English page)

아이를 애지중지 키우다.  (아이를 애지중지하면 성격을 버릴 것이다.)
They dote on their child. (If you coddle the child too much, she will act spoiled.)

    꽃을 애지중지 정성을 다하여 가꾸다.
They tend to the flowers with the utmost care.

그리하여 비가 오면 젖을까 벗어 들고 바람이 불 때는 날릴까 챙을 꼭 잡고 다니도록 그 모자를 애지중지하였던 것이다.
So when it is raining and it seems like it'll get all wet you take it off, but when the wind is blowing it might just fly away, suddenly you're holding onto the brim of that hat like it's your most precious belonging.

이 낡은 기타는 그가 가장 애지중지하는 물건이다
This old guitar is his most treasured possession.
