구사일생 (九死一生)

오늘은 구사일생 (九死一生)입니다.

우선 각 한자의 뜻부터 짚고 넘어가겠습니다. 
First, let's start by learning each character's meaning. 

• 아홉 구 (九) : 9, 아홉 (nine)
• 죽을 사 (死) : 죽음, 죽다 (death, to die)
• 하나 일 (一) : 1, 하나 (one)
• 살 생 (生) : 삶, 살다, 사람 (life, to live)

문자 그대로 9번 죽고 1번 살았다는 뜻입니다. 즉, '여러 번 죽을 고비를 넘겼다', '죽을 뻔 했다', '겨우겨우 살았다' 정도로 해석할 수 있겠습니다. 꼭 진짜 사람이 죽을 때만 쓰이는 것이 아니라, 경기에서 질뻔 했지만 운좋게 이겼을 때나 여러가지 비슷한 경우에도 쓰일 수 있습니다. 
Literally the meaning goes, "Died 9 times, lived 1 time."  
In other words, this can mean:
-To overcome a life-threatening crisis.
-Nearly died.
-Just barely survived.
This isn't a saying just for when someone nearly dies, but also in competitions where a team/someone nearly lost but had a lucky break and wins, or other similar situations.


실제 생활에서의 예문을 보겠습니다.Let's look at some colloquial ways to use this saying.

"높은 곳에서 떨어졌지만 구사일생했다."
I fell from very high up, but I survived.  

"하키 경기에서 구사일생으로 결승전에 진출했다."(=겨우겨우 이겼다, 질 뻔했다)
The hockey team manged a win to scrape their way into the playoffs.



※ 한국 일부 건물들, 특히 오래된 빌딩에는 4층이 없거나, 4층을 F층(four)으로 표시하는 건물도 많습니다. 그 이유는 숫자 4(四)와 죽는다는 뜻의 사(死)가 같은 발음이라서 '4=죽음의 숫자'라는 생각들을 가지고 있기 때문입니다. 한국뿐만 아니라 같은 한자를 쓰는 중국과 일본도 4는 죽음의 숫자라고 생각해서 불길하다고 생각합니다. In Korea, many buildings, especially older buildings will not have a 4th floor [marked] or will have the fourth floor written as "F".  This is due to the number 4 having the same pronunciation as the symbol for "death", leading to the belief that the number 4 signifies death.  This thinking is similar in other countries who use the same characters such as China and Japan, making it an ominous number in all of East Asia.
