CLS' Supplementary Classes / 보충수업

CLS is now offering extra study time beyond our regular classes on an individual basis.

CLS는 학생들이 한글과 더 빨리 익숙해질 수 있도록, CLS 선생님들이 개별지도 해 주는 수업을 개설합니다.

These classes are more like a language exchange, where CLS students can get extra help on their lessons or on whatever self-study materials they have. The goal of these classes is to help CLS students become better at Korean more quickly.

이 추가 수업들은 '언어 교환'에 좀 더 가깝습니다. CLS 학생들이 수업 관련해서나 또는 혼자 공부하다 궁금한 점에서 추가적으로 도움을 받을 수 있는 곳입니다. 이 수업의 목표는 CLS 학생들이 한국어를 좀 더 빨리 익히도록 도와주는데에 있습니다.

Currently the lower and intermediate level classes are open to CLS students only.  The lower level meets in the time between the level 1 and level 2 classes , and the intermediate level (3 and 4) can meet after their classes end.  Hee Seung teacher, who is leading the extra classes, will be there and also there could be other current or past CLS teachers who will help out when they have time.  The extra classes will take place in a cafe nearby the CLS classes (currently at Soongsil University).

현재 초급과 중급반은 CLS 학생에게만 열려 있습니다.
초급반은 1반과 2반 수업 사이 시간대(12:00~02:00)에서 진행되고, 중간 레벨(3, 4반)은 모든 수업이 끝난 뒤(04:00~06:00) 진행됩니다. 추가 교실을 담당하는 희승 선생님과 현재 하는 중이거나 과거에 CLS에 있었던 선생님들이 시간 있을 때 도와주기도 합니다. 현재 추가 수업은 CLS 수업이 있는 교실 근처에 있는 카페에서 진행합니다.


For level 5 and above, we would like to form a more academic version of a book club. The first book we chose is called "고구려 1", a historical novel about the Goguryo period.  It's a good way to study Korean history without boring ourselves!  We would meet during the week just to discuss the pages we all read, ask about difficult vocabulary or problems with comprehension.
We would like to have at least 2 consistent students in order to aid in discussion, so if you are interested and want more details, please send an email to our blog (conversational.learning.seoul[@]gmail[dot]com) or write a note on our facebook page.

5반이나 그 이상 고급반은, 책을 이용한 학술적인 모임을 구성하려고 합니다.
첫번째 책으로 고구려 시대를 다룬 역사적 소설인 "고구려 1"을 골랐습니다. 이것은 한국 역사를 지루하지 않게 배울 수 있는 좋은 방법입니다. 각자 책을 읽고 주중에 만나서 각자 읽었던 것 중에 어려운 단어나 이해하기 어려웠던 부분을 토론할 것입니다.
토론을 위해서는 최소한 2명의 지속적으로 나올 학생이 있어야 합니다. 추가적인 궁금한 사항이 있으면 블로그 메일(conversational.learning.seoul @ gmail.com)로 이메일을 보내거나, CLS 페이스북 페이지에 글을 남기면 됩니다.

Season 17 Orientation

Just a few weeks ago we welcomed new students to CLS at our season 17 orientation. 

몇 주 전에 CLS는 시즌 17 오리엔테이션에서 새로운 학생들을 맞이하였습니다.

We call our sessions "seasons" because each session aligns with a season of the year. Season 17 begins the 2014 winter session.  (Spring session starts in April, Summer in July, and Fall in October.)

저희는 각각 새로운 '기수'가 시작할 때마다 계절이 바뀌기 때문에 기수를 시즌이라고 부릅니다. 17기(시즌 17)는 2014년 겨울에 시작합니다. (봄 기수는 4월, 여름은 7월, 가을은 10월)

We had a great turnout yet again which has helped us reach over 100 students total this season.  Considering our humble beginnings just a few years ago, with a group of less than 10 people in only one class, this is so amazing.  It is all thanks to the friendship and support the volunteers and students share with one another. In Korean, you could say that CLS has a lot of 정(Jeong, 情)!  

저희는 그 동안의 꾸준한 노력으로 이번 시즌 총 100명이 넘는 학생을 달성하였습니다. 고작 수 년 전에 한 반에 10명도 안되는 학생들로 초라하게 시작했던 것을 생각하면 아주 대단한 성과입니다. 이것은 모두 자원봉사자들과 학생들이 하나가 되고 우정을 쌓아간 덕분이지요. 한국어로 이것을 'CLS는 정(情)이 많다'라고 합니다.

One of the greatest things about CLS' students is the diversity.  There are students, office workers, teachers, doctors, engineers - you name it.  And it is amazing to see how many different nationalities you might see in one class. It's such a great chance to meet others with similar interests but who may not have been able to meet otherwise.

CLS 학생들의 좋은 점중 하나는 '다양성'입니다. 한국어를 배우러 오는 학생들은 유학생들, 사무직, 선생님, 의사, 엔지니어 등등 끝도 없이 다양합니다. 그리고 한 반 안에 다른 국적을 가진 사람들을 볼 수 있습니다. 이것은 비슷한 흥미를 가졌지만 서로 만나기 힘들었던 여러 사람들을 한 곳에서 볼 수 있는 아주 좋은 기회입니다.

Here are some of the volunteer teachers introducing themselves. These are two of the three Level 1 teachers.   Level 1 is where students can learn 한글 (Hangul, Korean letters) and basic phrases.

자원봉사자 선생님들이 자기소개를 하고 있습니다. 1반 선생님 3명 중 2명입니다. 1반에서는 학생들이 한글과 기초 표현을 배웁니다.

Each class has one "main" teacher who writes the lessons, and two "sub" or assistant teachers who help teach during class, as well as are in charge of communication with students.
각 반은 직접 수업을 하는 1명의 메인 선생님과 수업을 보조하는 2명의 서브 선생님이 있습니다. 서브 선생님들은 학생들과 소통하는 역할도 합니다.

Level 2~  Where Korean grammar is introduced along with common language patterns.

2반은 기초적인 한국어 문법을 들어가기 시작합니다.

Level 3~ Where beginner learners focus more on putting new grammar to use, as well as learn a lot of new vocabulary words in the process.

3반은 초보자들을 위한 실용적인 문법에 초점이 조금 더 맞춰져 있고 많은 새로운 단어들을 점차 배우게 됩니다.

Level 4~ Focus on intermediate grammar, common phrases (often not found in textbooks), and boosting confidence in speaking skills.

4반부터는 중급 문법, 그리고 사전이나 교과서에 나오지 않는 일상 대화 표현을 배우고, 말하는 것을 자신있게 할 수 있도록 도와줍니다.

Level 5 ~ Where the entire class is conducted only in Korean, and students focus more on topics for class discussion. Since level 5 has had a history of long-term students (due to being the final level in CLS) it has a strong community and even boasts its own Facebook group!

5반은 모든 수업을 한국어 100%로 진행합니다. 학생들도 수업시간에 토론하듯 수업합니다. 아무래도 5반이 제일 높은 반이다 보니까, 5반 학생들은 주로 CLS에 오래 있었던 사람들이기 때문에 5반 만의 커뮤니티도 형성되어 있고 심지어는 5반에서 수업했던 학생들만의 페이스북 페이지도 있습니다.
