Body Idioms: 눈 Eyes

The Korean language often uses body parts to create commonly used idioms and sayings. Here are a few examples of this using the word '눈' which means 'eyes'.  

눈에 띄다 to catch your attention, stand out

• 빨간 지붕이 눈에 띄는 집 
• 거리에 외국인이 자주 눈에 띈다. 
• 그 옷은 아주 화려해서 유난히 눈에 잘 띈다
• 주인이 바뀐 뒤 손님이 눈에 띄게 줄었다

눈에 밟히다 to haunt

• 죽은 아들 자식의 모습이 자꾸 눈에 밟힌다  I am haunted by the phantom of my departed son

눈에 넣어도 아프지 않다 You're the apple of my eye.

• 우리 딸은 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않을 정도로 사랑스러워요. My daughter is the apple of my eye. 

첫눈에 반하다 Love at first sight

• 그에게 첫눈에 반했어. I fell in love with him at first sight.

눈을 맞추다 make eye contact

• 연설을 할 때 눈을 맞추는 것은 좋습니다. It's good to make eye contact when you give a speech.

눈을 피하다 avoid making eye contact

• 그녀가 계속 내 눈을 피해서 믿지 않을 수 밖에 없었어요. She kept avoiding eye contact with me so I just couldn't believe her. 

눈이 높다 have high standards

• 멋진 남자가 않아도 계속 제일 예쁜 여자만 소개해 달라고 하니 그는 눈이 너무 높더라. Despite not being very handsome,he keeps asking me to set him up with the prettiest women, and I think his standard s seem too high. 

눈이 맞다 fall in love

• 둘은 눈이 맞아 달아났어요.  They fell in love and ran away together. 

눈 깜짝할 사이 in the blink of an eye, in no time at all

• 눈 깜짝할 사이에 놓친다.  Blink, and you'll miss it.  
• 일주일이 눈 깜짝할 사이에 지나갔네. This week has come and gone so quickly.
